Environmental Awareness

In accordance with Embedian's environmental policy, Embedian is committed to full compliance with all regulations that seek to protect the environment and our natural resources including the RoHS and WEEE directives issued by the European Union. The two directives restrict six chemical substances in products we sell into EU countries, and also require that Embedian ensure these products are appropriately recycled or disposed of at the end of their lifespan. These standards are consistent with Embedian's existing policies of minimizing and eliminating the use of hazardous materials in our products and incorporating materials that are compatible with reuse and recycling.
Embedian is making significant progress towards our compliance goals. Our objective is to
  • (1) evaluate all products to determine which ones will be converted to RoHS compliant and
  • (2) to make all new products RoHS compliant by mid of 2006.

RoHS-restricted substances

The EU directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) requires that producers of electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market after July 1, 2006 limit the use of certain restricted substances. Products cannot contain more than 0.1% lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs); or over 0.01% cadmium. EU RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC

WEEE take-back and recycle

The EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) requires that producers of electronic equipment who sell into EU countries: (1) label their equipment to notify customers that it needs to be recycled, and (2) ensure that their products are appropriately disposed of or recycled at the end of their life. The WEEE directive became effective on August 13, 2005. Manufacturers must meet target objectives for recycling by December 2006. EU WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC
